Description

Rebuttinator is a focused tool for academics, journalists, researchers, op-ed writers, and anyone who needs to publish a careful, sourced, line-by-line response to someone else's document. THE WORKFLOW Paste or import your source — a press release, op-ed, policy memo, official statement, court filing, anything. Then click and drag to select passages and tag each one with a color-coded category: factually false, logic failure, rhetorical manipulation, fair point overstated, or any custom category you define. Add a written rebuttal note. Cite evidence with optional source URLs. Group paragraphs with section dividers. Add an executive summary at the top with numbered, color-coded findings. When you're ready, export a self-contained HTML page or PDF with the source text on the left and color-coded margin notes on the right. Send it. Publish it. Print it. Cite it. WHAT'S DIFFERENT ABOUT THE NATIVE MAC VERSION • Real undo and redo for every action, including text edits, category changes, and structural changes. • Document import: drop a PDF, Word file, RTF, or HTML file directly. Rebuttinator extracts the text and you can start annotating immediately. • PDF export with selectable text and clickable evidence links — not a screenshot. • Multi-document, multi-window: work on several rebuttals at once. • Native macOS file format (.rebuttal) with full document features: autosave, versions, iCloud Drive support, Quick Look. • Web-compatible: opens existing JSON projects from the free web version, exports back to JSON for round-tripping. • Section-divider editor with full edit and remove control. • Spell check and grammar via the standard macOS subsystems. PRIVACY BY DESIGN Rebuttinator runs entirely on your Mac. It does not collect, transmit, or share any of your work. Source documents, annotations, and exported files never leave your computer unless you choose to share them yourself. There are no analytics, no third-party SDKs, no telemetry, and no account required. VISUALLY CONSISTENT WITH THE WEB VERSION The native exports match the visual style of the original web version, including the same Source Serif 4 body type, two-column layout, sticky color legend, and numbered margin badges. Anyone who has read a rebuttal made with the free web app will find Mac exports look the same. ABOUT THE MAKER Rebuttinator was created by Chad M. Topaz, an academic and author of Unlocking Justice: The Power of Data to Confront Inequity and Create Change (Princeton University Press, 2026). The free web version remains available at chadtopaz.com/rebuttinator. The Mac version is a one-time purchase that supports continued development. CITATION Topaz, C.M.
