SafeRoute compares route options using historical collision data from the UK Department for Transport STATS19 dataset. Before you set off, you can see which route has the lowest historic collision density between your start and your destination. Built by a Chartered Engineer specialising in highways and road safety, SafeRoute is for anyone who would like a more informed view of the journey ahead. It is particularly useful for parents planning the school run, cyclists choosing between corridors, new and learner drivers, pedestrians comparing walking routes, fleet managers supporting duty of care, and local authority road safety teams. WHAT IT DOES • Compares up to three routes between any two points in Great Britain • Scores each route on a 1 to 10 scale based on historic collision density and severity • Shows the number of fatal, serious, and slight collisions recorded along each route • Filters collision data by travel mode, so cyclists see cyclist collisions, pedestrians see pedestrian collisions, and drivers see vehicle occupant collisions • Surfaces road context such as dominant speed limit, road type, and elevation gain for cycling and walking journeys • Hands off to Google Maps, Waze, or Apple Maps when you are ready to navigate THE DATA SafeRoute uses the Department for Transport STATS19 dataset, which records every personal injury road collision reported to the police in Great Britain. The current build covers 2019 to 2025, with 2025 data flagged as provisional. The full dataset behind the app contains over 669,000 records. WHAT IT DOES NOT DO SafeRoute does not provide turn-by-turn navigation or guarantee the safety of any route. Route scores reflect historic collision patterns over a multi-year period and do not account for real-time traffic, road works, weather, or changes since the data was last published. Always exercise your own judgement and stay alert to current road conditions. PRIVACY SafeRoute does not require an account, does not show advertisements, and does not track you. The "Use my location" feature uses your device's location only to set your starting point, and only when you tap the location button. Your location is never stored.
